Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • 1½ tsp cumin / jeera
  • 11 bay leaf or 1 sprig of curry leaves
  • 11 tsp grated ginger or ginger paste
  • 1 very few onion slices (optional)
  • 1½ cup tomato deseeded & chopped
  • 1½ tsp red chili powder
  • 1 turmeric little
  • 11 green chili slit (optional)
  • 1 salt as needed
  • 1¾ cup rice (any kind of rice)
  • 1¾ moong dal (refer notes)
  • 12 ½ cups water (refer notes)Wash and soak rice and dal for sometime. Drain water completely.
  • 1 Chop onions and tomatoes.
  • 1 Heat ghee in a pressure cooker or pot.
  • 1 Allow cumin to crackle and saute bay leaf as well.
  • 1 Fry ginger until fragrant. Do not burn.
  • 1 Fry onions until the raw smell goes. Add tomatoes, salt and turmeric and saute until they turn mushy.
  • 1 Add chili , red chili powder and cook for one to 2 mins.
  • 1 Add drained rice and fry for 3 mins. Pour water and pressure cook for 1 whistle. If cooking in a pot, cook until soft.
  • 1 Serve dal khichdi with papad, pickle or kadhi.
