So people who are trying this curry who don't have spinach/palak available go with other greens like arai keerai,mulakeerai,Methi or vendhaya keerai(fenugreek leaves) etc

Though I cook more of this onion-tomato style keerai-masiyal, once in a while I prefer this comforting no-oil keeraikootu which is what is usually made in chettinadu homes
Take drain dal, Green chllies, Salt in blendar / food processor. Add rest of ingredients except oil (Coriander leaves, curry leaves, asafoetida, mint leaves, Palak, baking soda, Lemon juice) to make thick batter
Palakkeeraimasiyal(palakoora pappu) is prepared with toor dal. when water starts boiling and when spinach is cooked , add cooked toor dal, and salt to it
Palak chana dal is a healthy and nutritious dal made with spinach leaves and chana dal. Spinach gives a nice colour and texture to the dal and turns the dish to a healthy meal
This is one type of keerai recipe from my Amma's kitchen which I enjoyed from my childhood. Spinach or any greens are winter vegetables which is fresh and full of nutrition in that season
Though palakdal may not seem very different from the South India KeeraiKootu, taste-wise it is very different and the special tempering of garlic to this dal makes it absolutely delicious
