  • 3/4 cup chana dal / bengal gram dal
  • 500 grams bottle gourd / lauki / sorekayi
  • 1 heaped tsp chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 heaped tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp cumin / jeera powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 heaped tsp salt or as required
  • 1 cup water
  • Fistful of chopped coriander leaves / cilantro
  • For the tempering
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds / jeera
  • 1/2 tsp asafoetida / hing powder
